The University Grants Commission (UGC) conducts National Eligibility Test (NET) to determine eligibility for lectureship and for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for Indian national in order to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and research. The Examination is conducted in Humanities (including languages), Social Sciences, Forensic Science, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science and Application and Electronic Science.
Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification
Candidates belonging to General/Other backward Classes who have secured at least 55% Marks (without grace of rounding off in Master’s Degree (or equivalent) examination in Humanities(including languages) and Social Studies, Forensic Science, Environmental Science, Computer Science and Applications, Electronic Science etc., are eligible to appear for this examination. Scheduled Caste Tribe category and Physically Handicapped/Visually Handicapped candidates who have secured at least 50% marks (without grace or rounding off) in Master’s degree (or equivalent) examination are eligible to appear in the NET examination.
Candidates who have appeared or will be appearing at the qualifying Master’s Degree examination and whose result is still awaited or candidates whose qualifying examination have been delayed may also apply for this Test. However, such candidates will be admitted provisionally and shall be considered eligible for award of JRF/Lectureship eligibility, only after they have passed the master’s Degree examination (or) equivalent with at least 55% marks (50% in case of SC/ST/PH/VH candidates) within one year from the date of UGC-NET examination under consideration.
Age Limit and Relaxation
There is no upper age limit for candidates appearing only for eligibility for lectureship. Applicants for Junior Research Fellowship should not be more than 28 years of age as on the first day of the month in which the NET Examination is to be held. Age relaxation for JRF: Age relaxation up to5 years is available to SC/ST/OBC/Physically Handicapped (PH) Women candidates, Relaxation, up to a maximum of 5 years, supported by a certificate from appropriate authority, is applicable to the candidates for the periods spent or research/training in the related/relevant subject of post graduation. Candidates possessing LLM.Degree are also permitted for relaxation in age up to a maximum of three (3) years. Total age relaxation on above grounds shall not exceed five (5) years under any circumstances.
Examination Schedule
The UGC conducts NET Examination twice every year, i.e., in the months June and December. The notifications announcing the June and December examinations are published in the months of March and September respectively in the weekly journal of nation-wide circulation-Employment news.
Scheme of Examination
The test will consist of three papers. Paper I will be of general nature intended to assess the teaching research aptitude of the candidate. It is primarily designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension and divergent thinking. Paper II will consider of questions based on the subject selected by the candidate. These papers will consist of a test booklet containing 50 objective type questions. Paper III will consist only descriptive type of questions from the syllabus of the subject selected by the candidate Paper III will be evaluated only for those candidates who are able to secure a minimum of such aggregate marks in Paper I & II as fixed by commission.

Value of Fellowship
The value of the fellowship in currently Rs.5000/- per month, which will be governed by the terms and conditions as lay down by the CSIR or UGC.SC/ST and OBC applicants may be given such consideration as per the decision of the coordination committee. Candidates who qualify in the test for Lectureship will be governed by the rules and regulations for recruitment of Lecturers of the Universities/Colleges/State. The Starting pay package recommended by the UGC for College lecturers has been recently revised and is now around Rs.14000/- per month. However the scale varies from State to State.
