           Sociology is the study of society. It is the detailed study of the man and his activity. Sociology studies human interaction, inter-relations, their conditions and consequences. Sociology has close relation with Anthropology, Criminology, Psychology, etc. It examines the ways in which the members of a group interact on each other. It also makes studies of particular areas such as region, medicine, industry, and politics and so on. Sociologists are involved in making scientifically valid statements about events in particular societies and their causes. Sociology gives a strong basis for many careers including social work and administration, personnel management and so on.

           Sociologists investigate the origin and development of community life and relationships of groups of human beings. He collects or supervises  collection and tabulation of data, relating to  the  development of  community organizations, social customs, etc; studies urban problems, crime, juvenile delinquency, unemployment, prostitution, drug-addiction, alcoholism  beggary,  suicide and collects data; assess trend and attitude of the society and observes the social change in time and space.

           In India, the importance of study of Sociology is still greater. The Indian societies are undergoing a rapid transformation due to the impact of urbanization, westernization and modern educational system.

Careers in Sociology

    Sociology is useful as a teaching subject: In view of its importance Sociology is becoming popular as a teaching subject also. It is being accorded an important place in the curriculum of colleges and universities. The subject of Sociology is included in the subject to be offered by the candidates competing for higher examinations such as IAS and the like.Sociology as a profession: The students of Sociology can get jobs in the following fields:
