Social work is the art and the science of bringing various resources to bar on individuals, group and community needs by the applications of scientific methods, to enable people to people them. Social worker’s attempts to alleviate and prevent individual or social problems caused by factors such as poverty, illness, unemployment , broken family, physical, mental and emotional handicap, anti-social behavior, etc. Social Work is a professional service with multi-dimensional fields which encompasses criminology and correctional administration, personal management and industrial relations, medical and psychiatric social work, community development, woman and child development, project management and consultancy services, rehabilitations services, etc. Being an applied profession, social work curriculum, both theory and practical goes hand in hand.
Areas of Specialization
Medical and Psychiatric Social Work (Health and Mental Health) :
It is done in clinical settings for the treatment and rehabilitation of the patients and it supplements the medical and psychiatric professional in the treatment process. In addition to these, social worker contributes to the preventive and promotional aspects of the health programs.
Family and Child Welfare :
This is a specialized area of social work to deal with child guidance, case of handicapped, special schools, family welfare agencies, family counseling, etc.
Urban and Rural Community Development :
Social workers with this specialization work in administrative and field positions in agencies operated by Govt., NGOs in the Community Development, Health & Sanitation, Human Resource Development, etc. are the common areas.
Criminology and Correctional Administration :
This involves rehabilitation of criminals, juvenile delinquents, etc. Areas of services are prisons, reformatories, remand homes, probation services, etc.
Labour Welfare and Industrial Relations :
Specialists is in this area are placed in industries. They attempt to provide proposed condition for work. Normally these people are called Welfare Officers.
Research :
Social workers often conduct research on topics of concern like tribal welfare, human sufferings, health, human development, etc.
Project and Consultancy Services :
Social workers are placed in various welfare projects as managers and they provide consultancy on areas like human development, welfare issues, etc.
Course opportunities
Social work degree at graduate level is 3 year program known as Bachelor of Social Work (BSW). +2 pass is required for admission to this course.
For PG in Social Work, minimum qualification is degree in any discipline or equivalent from any recognized university with minimum 50% of marks. The selection will be made on the basis of written test, group discussion and interview.
Job Opportunities
Those who are qualified can go for the regular NGO jobs or even work on corporate organization as a Welfare Officer. Job opportunities depend upon the specialization one chooses at the second year of the course.
Specializations
- Labour Welfare and Personnel Management: Those who opt this field can become a Personnel Manager in a company or a Labour Welfare Officer in Govt. Sector
- Medical & Psychiatric Social Work: it enables one to become a Counsellor in a Psychiatric Hospital or Social Worker in a Medical Hospital
- Criminology and Correctional Management: This leads one to take up the job of a Criminologist/Social Worker in Jails, delinquency homes, etc.
- Community Development> this enables one to work as a Social Worker in Voluntary and Govt. Agencies
- Family and Child Welfare: This helps one obtain a job in the Govt. Or private sector as a Child Welfare Officer, Community Worker, etc.
