How to face an Interview
A candidate must prepare in advance and plan in a proper way for the success in an interview. Things to be kept in mind on the previous day of an interview. Decide the dress that has to be worn on the day of the interview. The dress must be suitable to the nature of the job. It is better to avoid new clothes because you may find it difficult to function in them. Deep colours must be avoided. Do not change your hairstyle. A different hair style may create inconvenience for you. Make sure that your clothes for the occasion are properly ironed and your shoes well polished.
Arrange the certificates and other documents required in a folder. The call center for the interview must be kept on the top of all other documents. Go through the Bio-data, Mark sheets, Certificates and prepare yourself to answer the questions likely to be asked about them. Make sure that your watch is working properly and showing the right time. It is desirable to listen to the T.V at night and take short notes of the important happenings. Adequate and sound sleeping is necessary on the previous night of the interview. So go to bed as early as possible.
The day of interview
Take short notes on the important happenings from Newspapers. Try to reach the place of interview before half an hour. It is better to talk with the other candidates while waiting for your turn.
On the day of Interview
Knock at the door before you enter the room. Greet all the interviewers as soon as you enter, the lady (if there is any) first and gentlemen there after. Sit down only when you are asked to and do not forget to say ‘Thank You’ before sitting. See that your manners are polite, gentle and cheerful through out the interview. Don’t forget to say ‘Please’, ‘Thank you’ etc. Whenever they are to be said. Any gesture of artificiality must be avoided and all your manners and talk must be natural. See that you are not getting emotional during the interview. Don’t interrupt the interviewers while they are asking you questions. If you did not understand or hear a question make a polite request for the repeat. Sit straight without crossing legs. The folder you carry containing certificates and documents must be kept on your legs. It must not be laid on the table. Avoid touching moustache, scratching nose, arranging hair, running fingers through buttons, catching collar or sleeves of shirt etc. Carrying a bunch of keys or a pen in your hand must be avoided. Once an opinion is taken in any subject, it must be firm. Be very careful not to change the opinion.
Questions must be answered in simple and straight forward manner. Avoid additional information unless asked for. Answers must not be repeated. Don’t get excited or disheartened at a difficult question. Be very careful and alert through out the interview. All sorts of mannerisms must be avoided. If complimented for the answers do not forget to thank the interviewers. If your opinions or answers are rejected, don’t hesitate to say ‘sorry’.
After Interview
Rise from the seat only after the chairman permits you. Don’t forget to thank the chairman after interview. Before you leave the room, make sure that the chair on which you were sitting is on the proper place.
Group Discussion
Group discussion is an important part of the selection procedure for job recruitment and admission to various courses. There are certain ‘Do’s’ and ‘don’ts’ in the strategy of success. A few points to be borne in mind at the time of preparation are given below. Details of conventional topics of public interest must be gathered by following daily news, editorial comments, articles etc by experts. Maintain a personal diary of events. Language skills including basic study of grammar, pronunciation and effective expressions have to be developed. Language must be simple and powerful. Bombastic style must be avoided. Your facts are to be logically arranged. Don’t take extreme positions. Be broadminded in your approach and meet opposition with a smile. Discuss and not dispute. Arguments must be supported with facts. Be polite and not arrogant. Appreciate the good views of others. Speak patiently and convincingly and let others speak. Encourage a shy or a silent member to speak. Be very careful not to use provocative languages. Never shy away from an opportunity to express your views. Show willingness for co-operation and teamwork. Your talk must be neither fast nor dragging. Don’t shout or whisper. Talk normally. Mannerisms like ‘you see’, ‘I mean’, ‘Yea-yeah’ etc. Must be avoided. Never show the sign of getting confused. Expressions such as ‘As you put it rightly’, ‘we should appreciate the view of etc must be used. Say “Let us look at this from a different angle when you want to differ. Illustrate your views by examples and if your views are not being carried out don’t get disheartened. Be careful not to blow your trumpets if you get an opportunity to open or close the discussion. Dress neatly. Be punctual and be optimistic about success.
