The growth in Travel and Tourism has led to a boom in the growth of Hotel Industry. As such, manpower requirement for hotel is on the rise. Employment opportunities depend on the size of the hotel. We have hotels of different types like five star hotels, smaller star hotel in Cosmopolitan towns, smaller towns and hotels located in tourist centers. Highway hotels are on the increase. Heritage hotels are other types. These are located in important pilgrim locations, temple towns and wild life sanctuaries.  Integrated sports resorts are other new concepts in the industry. Some new concepts are the Hotels on wheels and Houseboats.

Name of Work
The work in hotels, big or small is divided among key departments. The Manager and assistant manager in hotels  make sure the efficient operation of their establishments. Big hotels employ hundreds of workers and management is divided into various levels. Under the supervision of the top management, the various department heads operate. The various departments in a hotel are:

  • Catering management which includes Beverage Manager, Banquet manager, Restaurant manager and Food & Service Manager etc.
  • Catering operations: It includes culinary department, steward department and food service department
  • Front Office department: front office manager, Receptionists, Information Assistant, Bell Boy etc.
  • House keeping department: Floor supervision, Room Manager, House Keeper

Future Prospects

With the huge gap between the hotel industry’s annual personal requirement and the number of the graduate passing out from existing institutions, a job at the end of training is almost a guarantee. In good institutions there are placement schemes. Also this is a fast moving career where upward mobility is purely merit based. At the present rate of growth of Indian Tourism, the future for those opting for a career in hotel management is extremely bright.

Type Of Courses

Certificate Courses – Duration 3 months to 1 year
Diploma Courses – 2 years to 2 ½ years
Degree Courses – 3 years
Post-Degree Courses – 2 years
Eligibility

Generally +2 is the Qualification for recognized courses in Hotel Management. For courses offered by The National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology (NCHMCT) there is 50% mark restriction. English should be compulsory subject at the +2 level. For courses offered by private hotel chains the qualification varies from +2 to degree. For PG diploma courses eligibility is degree. There are also certificate courses with SSLC as the qualification.

Admission Procedure
For courses offered by the NCHMCT, admission is given through a Joint Entrance Examination. Final selection is made after group discussions and interview. The JEE examines your ability in :

  • Reasoning & Logical Ability
  • Numerical Ability and Scientific Aptitude
  • General Knowledge
  • English Language

For courses conducted by private Hotel Chains, they conduct their own selection procedure. The procedure generally includes written test, group discussion and interview. Here more importance is given to personality than academic merit.
The premier institutes in Hotel Management are the Institutes of Hotel management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition administered by the National Council of Hotel Management and Catering Technology. The Council conducts Diploma and Post-Diploma levels. In addition there are notable private institutes like, Taj Group Institute of Hotel management at  Aurangabad, the Welcome group Graduate School of Hotel Administration at Manipal, the  Obroi School of Learning and Development,. Delhi and the Kolkata based IIAS School of Hotel and Tourism Management. There are thousands of institutes that offer various types of Hotel Management courses throughout the country. One thing the candidates must check before taking admission to a Hotel Management Institute is whether it is recognized by the AICTE, Government of India.
