Teaching is an enriching experience. It involves being with children and adults and helping them go through different courses and solving their problems. Many persons have an inborn desire to become teachers and for them a career in teaching is highly recommended. It is not a fallback profession for those who fail in other careers, but a highly responsible one, in which you can shape the minds of tomorrow. The teaching profession has many fallacies about it. It is commonly believed that any one can teach, provided that he has a little knowledge of the subject. Nothing could be away from the truth. Imparting knowledge to the pupils is just one thing that a teacher should have among the other qualities. A proficient teacher requires the ability to communicate well, to draw the attention of young minds; even at the most boring subjects, to inspire the pupils and finally the ability to set an example by word and deed. The rewards of being in teaching are also great, financially, school teachers may not be at the top of the rung, but in colleges and universities the UGC scales apply and the total earning is a tidy sum. The best reward, however, comes from the students in terms of respect. A society still respects its teachers even if one may not hold it a very important post as far as hierarchy of jobs go. The satisfaction on seeing a pupil doing well is immeasurable. In rural areas, parents often express their gratitude in remarkable ways. This satisfaction is all enough, even if avenues of promotions are limited in this field.
Job Avenues
Though most people get into teaching by accident, it is advised that if one really wants to be a teacher, one should plan one’s career. There are three levels through which one can get enrolled: school, college or university. Each level calls for different expertise. If you love to be with children, school teaching would be a good option, but if you want to be with youngsters, it is better to look at the college or university. Teaching is ideal for ladies because of their in-born qualities as working hours are stiff and it enables them to bring forth their families too. Much of the work, such as correction of mistakes, can be done at home. The important skills that a schoolteacher should possess are tremendous patience and the ability to get into the mind of a child. Overcrowded classrooms deprive the facility to listen to the students individually. To overcome this problem, excellent schools limit the size of their classes. Often, one may be caught in the race to complete the syllabus and the child may then be neglected. A teacher should be well aware of the fact that apart from teaching it is his duty to mould the character of pupils.
It has been said that teaching as a profession is often low-priced. People treat it as a time pass and join it because there may not be anything else to do. This is sad, because the profession is a noble one and requires more commitment than is commonly believed. Of course, the committed teachers are often looked upon. A person who takes short cuts will not be devoted to this profession. Finally, good teachers are the key to any worthwhile educational reform. National prosperity is linked with good educational system. For education to be wholesome, emphasis must be placed equally on the development of a well-rounded personality as on the honing of the learner’s innate intellect and aptitudes. The present educational system of the country is listed under the following categories; pre school or nursery school, primary school, secondary school or higher secondary school and college or university education. Each level needs specific educational qualifications.
