The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research holds national level joint CSIR-UGC-Examination (NET) normally twice every year, one in June and the other in December. This examination is to determine the eligibility of Indian Nationals for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and appointment of lecturers.

Eligibility

Educational Qualification : Candidates who have scored at least 55% marks (50% for SC/ST) in the Masters Degree Examination in the following or related subjects are eligible to appear for the exam.. Chemical Sciences, Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Physical Sciences. A candidate who is appearing/has appeared in the final year M.Sc or equivalent examination may also apply, admission subject to conditions.

Age Limit : For JRF the minimum age requirement is 19 years as on July 1st /December 1st of the year of examination, the upper age limit 28 years and the same is relaxed up to five years for SC/ST/OBC, Physically Handicapped and female applicants. For lectureship minimum age is 19 years and no upper age limit.

Scheme of Examination : The Examination consists of two papers. Paper I consists of two sections. Sections A will have 30 questions on general   information on science and its interface with society to test the candidates’ awareness of science, aptitude for reasoning and also a few questions from common elementary computer science. Section B will have 70 objective type questions from the subject area chosen by the candidates. Negative marking will be made for wrong answer. Paper II will consist of questions requiring descriptive answers. The final result will be based on aggregate of marks secured in both the paper.
